Frequently Asked Questions

Is there availability at your men's sober living home?
We are a smaller home than most sober livings. When we are full there are only 11 men plus our living in manager that reside at Hilltop. Most sober living homes in Los Angeles are two or three times the size. We believe that a smaller place gives us an opportunity to be more hands on and engaged in your recovery. Please contact us to check current openings or to reserve a spot as it becomes available.

What is the accommodation capacity of your sober living homes?
Our sober living property comprises two separate homes in Los Angeles, each thoughtfully appointed to ensure comfort and privacy. The first is a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom residence where our manager lives. The second home features 4 bedrooms with 2 baths, housing two beds in each room—none of which are bunk beds. We accommodate a maximum of 8 residents in this space, providing them with high-quality 12-inch Tempur-Pedic mattresses, along with sheets and towels for added convenience.

What amenities and essentials are included in the living arrangement?
Our residents have access to a fully equipped kitchen stocked with cooking essentials and basic foods. In addition, we ensure that necessities such as toilet paper, paper towels, various cleaning products, as well as personal hygiene items like shampoo and soap are readily available. We also provide a desktop computer with Wi-Fi access, a printer, and laundry facilities with detergent to meet all your living needs in our sober living house.

Can I request a private room in the sober living house?
While most of our residents share rooms, private rooms may become available depending on our current occupancy. We recommend contacting us directly to discuss the possibility of private accommodations and to check on the latest availability.

How much does it cost to stay at your sober living facility?
We aim to keep our pricing accessible and below the typical Los Angeles rates. For detailed rate information and to discuss our flexible pricing options, please reach out to us directly. Our halfway house is here to work with you to make your recovery journey affordable.

Am I allowed to work?
Absolutely, we encourage residents to work during their stay. Our goal is to facilitate a balanced lifestyle where you can maintain employment, attend necessary meetings, and foster both personal and sobriety growth in a supportive environment.

Do you work with any IOPs?
Yes, while we don't have formal affiliations, we are well-equipped to recommend and facilitate connections with some of the top-rated IOPs in the Los Angeles area. Our recommendations are tailored to your specific needs and are mindful of your health insurance coverage, ensuring accessible options for all, including those with Medi-Cal.

Could you describe the structure and rules of your sober living environment?
Our sober living home offers a structured yet understanding environment to support our residents' journey to recovery. We establish a curfew that extends progressively with your tenure in the home—increasing by one hour after each 30-day milestone up to 90 days. Residents are expected to rise by a set time each morning, make their beds, and keep their personal and shared spaces clean and tidy. Daily cleaning of common areas is a collective responsibility, with each resident assigned a minor weekly chore on a rotating schedule

We hold weekly house meetings to address concerns and ensure everything runs smoothly. Sundays are reserved for a deep clean to start the week fresh, followed by an evening of communal game night where sober friends are also welcome to join. In addition to the fun, we host a Saturday morning AA meeting in our backyard and organize occasional hikes in Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. We also offer monthly sessions of guided meditation or breathing techniques for those interested.

For safety and accountability, we use the Life360 app to have location access in case of emergencies, such as a resident missing curfew or not being where they indicated they would be. This tool is not used invasively but as a precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our community.

How do you handle relapse within the sober living home?
Handling relapse is an unfortunate part of addiction. In the event of a relapse, the resident is asked not to return to the house immediately and to inform us of their situation. Depending on the circumstances, we may assist in arranging for detox or a stay in a short-term stabilizing facility to help you sober up.

Re-admittance to our home post-relapse involves a careful and compassionate discussion, weighing various factors that cannot be fully detailed on an FAQ page. There are certain situations we consider non-negotiable relapses, which would regrettably result in a resident being asked to leave permanently. These include bringing drugs or alcohol into the home, being intoxicated on the premises, lying about relapse, involving others in their relapse, or failing to report someone else's relapse. These strict policies are in place to protect the well-being and sobriety of the entire community in our home.

Am I allowed to travel for work or personal reasons while living in the sober living home?
Travel is permitted; however, we ask that residents do not plan trips during their initial 30 days with us, unless there is an exceptionally compelling reason. This initial period is crucial for acclimation and integration into our community's structure and routine. After this phase, we can discuss and arrange travel plans on a case-by-case basis to ensure that your recovery progress remains on track.

Can I have visitors in the sober living facility?
Yes. We encourage visitors. Oftentimes our guests have sober friends, family or their sponsors at our home to spend quality time together.

Are overnight stays away from the sober living house allowed?
Certainly, residents are permitted to have overnight stays provided they are planned in advance. We ask that during your time away, you maintain daily communication with us and attend twelve-step meetings. Upon return to our sober living community, a routine drug and alcohol screening will be conducted to ensure the safety and sobriety of our home.

Is transportation to treatment or meetings provided?
We carpool to meetings every evening. Our guests are on a group chain with our owner and managers. Everyone checks in daily about their work, IOP and/or school schedules as well as which meetings they plan on attending.

Rides are offered daily. Rides to IOP or work are not offered by us explicitly. But we are happy to help you or your loved one on schedule and book an Uber or Lyft. However, you are responsible for paying for it. We are happy to pay for it upfront as we book the ride for you, but we expect to be reimbursed. Receipts are provided to each guest and/or their family member.

We are only three blocks from the Gold Line Metro Station at Heritage Square. Which is a rare accommodation in Los Angeles. Using public transport is easy. The guest’s at our home are always more than happy to offer carpool rides to and from the grocery store.

How long can I stay in the sober living home?
While residents are not bound to a fixed term, we recommend a minimum stay of three months to gain the full benefit of our program. Ideally, our residents engage in a longer-term commitment of 6 to 18 or 24 months. This time frame allows for a thorough journey through the steps with a sponsor, the adoption of a sober lifestyle, the establishment of new habits and fellowship of sober friends, and the creation of a new life path.

Our hope is that after a few months, you have a new foundation to help you find meaningful long term sobriety and then we begin to start planning for your transition back into a life where you no longer need the extra support and accountability.
